About

Hi, my name is Lloyd Portman and I have been writing poetry for 35 years, it's my daily habit. Subjects to write about are everywhere therefore poetry flows from the pen of my heart as I articulate the various moods and vagaries of these subjects.

I am aware of the fragility and sensitivity of the heart as I often compare the heart with a sea anemone. The seasons of our heart affect the different views we read and how we receive these messages. As a Poet, I endeavor to capture the moods and atmosphere of my subjects and you read the results.

Depending upon your emotional state, receiving and deciphering the message maybe instantly exciting. If you are needing some encouragement the poem of the day may not have the message you are looking for.

I understand the emotional tides we all work around and no matter if the tide is in or out it never stands still. No doubt you enjoy being encouraged and inspired as these are basic human requirements like food and water are!

The psychological definitions of our various emotional states are well documented and rather than redefining these lets simplify it. We are either high or low and everything in between, it's that simple!

I started coaching people how to write poetry many years ago. I had some fun teaching tradesmen on building sites and in the mines when I worked in Western Australia. Because poetry connects with our emotions we need to read it with engaged emotions.

Poetry can be read cognitively for grammatical correctness and depending on the subject, the word flow can define the subject. When writing my Christian Poetry I use the poetry to identify the subject and the reflection/questions are to articulate the meaning and engage the audience.

No matter what your poetry flavor or need is I believe the modern style is far different from the previous centuries which have their place. One of the constraints I had to work through was my own mindsets of what was the accepted poetry writing standard of either rhyme or prose. I have chosen to write with  a prose style because I prefer my poetry to be short and punchy.

I used to write rhyme poetry when I first started because I thought this is how poetry is written! It never felt comfortable and after battling with myself for a year or so I took my whole collection and burned it page by page. That day was the hardest and best thing I ever did for my progress and change of style. That's another story for later!
